As a family, the McCrorys emigrated from a farm in the Sperrin mountains of Co. Tyrone in the Mid Ulster region of Ireland
to live in Darlington, Co. Durham, England in 1960. The oldest boy at home, Patrick, was then aged 11 years.
Experiencing the upheaval of emigrating at such a young age must have left an impression on Patrick. As soon as he was old enough to drive, he bought his first vehicle: a Ford Thames removal van. As was commonly the case at the time, this was equipped with a starting handle and would now be a valuable classic collector’s item!
A move to the Midlands
Patrick duly went into the removals business and, after expanding the company within the UK, moved his depot to the central England city of Nottingham in 1989. It was here that McCrorys Removals was incorporated as McCrorys Removals Ltd and started to specialise in domestic relocations between the UK and Ireland.
But why Nottingham?
Says Patrick: ''Although most of our customers who are moving to or from Ireland tend to be in London and the southern counties, there’s no disadvantage in us being based in the Midlands. In fact, all the most frequent ferries between the UK And Ireland now depart from ports in the north of the UK – making us ideally located.”
Into the EU…and out again
Having been established for over 50 years, McCrorys know more than most about transporting goods between the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Rules and regulations have varied over the years, with the most recent changes coming in after Brexit. Our customers have the benefit of our extensive knowledge and experience, as well as our ability to provide in-house customs clearance and act as shipping agents.
